The first seedling from our lab finally bloomed, and in a 2.25 inch pot!
Phragmipedium Wössen ‘Blushing Bride’ (schlimii ‘ORCHIDbabies Pearl’ x richteri ‘Twister’)
was beyond expectations. A large bloom on a miniature plant, a white bloom tinged with pink,
this remake of Wössen benefited from the schilimii parent with lots of white,
and the richteri parent with large pouch and highly twisted petals. Dr. Jim Newsom suggested the
clonal name that is very descriptive of this flower.
With age, we should expect branching and sequential flowering from both plants.
Two Phrag Wössens have received AM/AOS awards, and both had branched inflorescences. One had 5 flowers and 5 buds on one inflorescence!
The Phrag schlimii parent is native to Columbia, grows on steep slopes, has a good sequential blooming characteristic, and is of small stature. The Phrag richteri parent is of the pearcei group, typically growing above water on vertical cliffs in Ecuador and Peru, is a plant of small stature and like schlimii does well in a lower light with a moist environment.
From the Wössen we expect a small plant (10-12 inch leaf span), ease in
growing, and good sequential blooming characteristics. The plant should
multiply quickly and require medium light.
The smaller seedlings of this cross will be offered as a special for $12 each this month. The larger ones that are close to blooming will be $20 for January. This special is only for Newsletter subscribers, and this special will not be on the website.
